Exactly one year to the day after Ray “J.R.” Stewart was taken from us, his family and friends took a tremendous step forward on what will be a lifelong journey of healing. On November 27, 2018, The J.R. Stewart 141 Foundation established “The J.R. Stewart 141 Endowed Memorial Scholarship” at New Mexico State University.
This endowment is only possible thanks to the tremendous generosity of Ray’s family and many, many friends. In October 2018, the Armaduras LE Motorcycle Club of Las Cruces, of which Ray was a member, held the inaugural “Back the Blue J.R. Stewart 141 Foundation Motorcycle Run.” The support for the event was overwhelming. The money raised through registration fees, donations and the silent and live auctions was enough to fully fund the endowment. Beginning in the Spring of 2020, scholarships in Ray’s name will be awarded and will continue in perpetuity.
The J.R. Stewart 141 Endowed Memorial Scholarship will benefit the children and grandchildren of current or retired law enforcement personnel in Dona Ana County. Also eligible to apply are children and grandchildren of fallen law enforcement officers in the state of New Mexico. Recipients will be selected by a committee including members of the NMSU Foundation and the Financial Services Department.
Our fundraising efforts and support for this endowment has just begun. As it continues grows, so too will the number or scholarships that will be awarded and the amount of money each student will receive. The establishment of The J.R. Stewart 141 Endowed Memorial Scholarship shows the commitment of this community to continue his legacy. We are excited to continue to raise money for such worthy causes and for you all to meet each of the scholarship recipients. They will carry Ray’s love of life forward for generations to come.
